Farm Stay East Anglia

A DAY OUR AROUND DUNWICH AND MINSMERE

The Blythburgh road to DUNWICH takes you through heathland & forest, where there are picnic spots & good marked walks. Coming into the village you will pass Bridge Nursery where you can purchase Clematis plants, they also serve a Good Cream Tea, and you then pass the parish church of St. James.

Dunwich was a large & important port in the Middle Ages but coastal erosion has taken its toll & many ruined churches are beneath the sea. Legends abound & you can find out more in the MUSEUM - keep left at the church & it's on the right just before the excellent SHIP INN. If you want fish & chips, the café by the beach car park is renowned for them. The beach is mainly shingle with sandy cliffs & wonderful views, particularly towards Southwold.

Minsmere beach or DUNWICH HEATH as it's commonly known, is approached by a narrow road & is owned by the National Trust (free parking for members). The Trust shop at the end of an attractive row of old coastguards' cottages has information about local walks & birdwatching and a very good café serving all day refreshments. The beach is pleasant with good bathing and there is a broad path behind the beach to the south with Sizewell nuclear power station in the distance. From the path you can look over the Scrape on the world famous RSPB Reserve frequented by a variety of birds including the nightjar and Avocet. At the sluice gate you can do a round trip going inland to the EEL'S FOOT pub at Eastbridge. MINSMERE RESERVE can be entered from the Westleton road.

A visit to WALBERSWICK is a must, stop and look at the church, built in the ruins of a much larger one. There lovely houses here & to reach the beach you can either go down a rough road beside the village hall or go past the Green & park near the river, then walk to the sea. The beach is wild with sand dunes and good safe bathing making it a paradise for small children. In the mid summer you need to fight for a patch to go crabbing! The PARISH LANTERN is a very good café & gift shop on the Green & both the ANCHOR and BELL serve excellent food. You can walk along the river or over the Bailey bridge to Southwold.

Enjoy the fabulous colours of the county and try the Suffolk Coast & Heath's long distance footpath. Following the Suffolk Coastal path will highlight this lovely area of natural beauty AONB.
