Farm Stay East Anglia

A DAY OUT AROUND FRAMLINGHAM AND WOODBRIDGE

Leave the A12 at Yoxford and proceed west on the A1120 to PEASENHALL. In this very friendly village you will find EMMETTS GROCERY SHOP which has a Royal warrant for ham sold to the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. However, they really became famous through Delia Smith, who mentioned their ham on her cookery programme a few years ago They sell thousands of ham a year.

Keep on the A1120. In DENNINGTON you may like to visit its lovely church, one of so many we have here in Suffolk. On to SAXSTEAD with its wonderful WINDMILL (English Heritage) a sure subject for brush & paint or camera. Opposite the windmill turn left and proceed to FRAMLINGHAM, a lovely little market town with a splendid CASTLE, also English Heritage, once home of the Dukes of Norfolk. The castle walls are complete and you may do the circuit with electronic guide in hand to tell you all the interesting bits. They have some super circular walks here and a “ t own trail ” . If you are gasping at the end of all that I recommend a visit to No. 10. Teashop or the Dancing Goat on the Market Hill for some refreshment.

Leave Framlingham on the B1116, passing through PARHAM. The AIR MUSEUM is well worth a visit. Just before you reach the A12 turn right into WICKHAM MARKET. In the square you will find QUILTERS HAVEN, the most dangerous place to go if you enjoy patchwork or quilting! Opposite Quilters Haven is another super TEASHOP, ideal for coffee or light lunches. Follow the signs to EASTON FARM PARK which is a Victorian model farm set in the picturesque Deben valley. There are many farm animals including Suffolk Punch horses, pets paddock, a Green Trail to walk and displays of country bygones and vintage machinery. There are also Go Carts and a Playbarn for the children.

Now head south to WOODBRIDGE, passing through Melton. Just pass the council buildings turn left at the lights on to the ring road. A good place to park is by the station and swimming pool, which are on the left. At the station is the Suffolk Coastal Tourist Information Centre and Cinema. Woodbridge is an old market town with many lovely old buildings and interesting shops. A good place for antique collectors. Over the railway line by the Tourist Office you will discover the RIVER DEBEN with its working TIDE MILL, and all the delights that boats can offer. Across the river is the site of SUTTON HOO where there is a National Trust Visitor Centre and some of the Treasures can be seen in the summer months.

Now take the B1084 through Rendlesham Forest to ORFORD. If you stop in the Forest there are fantastic Forest Cycle Routes to explore! Another river, the Alde this time, and another CASTLE - ORFORD CASTLE. Both castles are owned by English Heritage, who put on some stunning performances at both venues during the summer. You may take some interesting boat trips from Orford, or walk along the river bank. THE CHURCH is well worth a visit, as is PINNEYS, well known for smoked fish. You have a lovely journey now to Snape via Sudbourne. This is really lovely in bluebell time and also in the autumn is a good place for chestnuts. Pass Snape Maltings and at the crossroads turn left on to the A1094, which will take you back to the A12.

If you enjoy cycling you may like to explore the North Sea Cycle Route which takes you through some llovely Suffolk Countryside and coast.
