A DAY OUT AROUND SOUTHWOLD

Don't miss BLYTHBURGH CHURCH on your way to Southwold. Known as the Cathedral of the Marshes, it has commanding views over the Blythe Estuary & a breathtaking interior, (car park nearby). Stop at the WHITE HART for refreshment or take a walk along the estuary to watch the wading birds, especially on the mudflats at low tide.

SOUTHWOLD, a gem of a town, & popular since Edwardian times has not lost its charm & is best explored on foot having parked along the front or beside the common. Adnams Brewery dominates the town - there's often a malty smell – and behind THE CROWN is a WAREHOUSE selling fine WINES & KITCHENWARE.

As well as the greens, there is a lighthouse, a pier with amusement arcade and handmade mechanical water clock, a magnificent church, a museum & 2 or 3 art galleries.

THE CROWN and SWAN HOTELS in the High street provide quality dinners or bar snacks &, of the many pubs serving food, the LORD NELSON at the end of a cul de sac is unspoilt. There are also several teashops in the town centre and Pier. Bear right at the Market Place to SOUTH GREEN with its cannons & take a cliff path to the promenade & beach, lined with fascinating beach huts.

A nice walk from the common takes you across the golf course to the Harbour & river separating Southwold from Walberswick. You can go over the Bailey bridge or, in summer a row boat will ferry you (& your bike) over to this pretty village. Stay on the Southwold side & explore the foreshore, enjoy fish & chips at the HARBOUR INN or take a half hour trip on the COASTAL VOYAGER, a fast and exciting sea ride from a landing stage near the boat yard. Return on Ferry road or walk along the beach.

To visit the unusual church at COVEHITHE, follow the signs to Wrentham & take the lane to Covehithe. You will be confronted by a mighty ruin, dwarfing the few dwellings in the existing village as much of the original church was dismantled in the 1670s to make way for today's humbler one. Follow the road to the cliffs to see how the fierce sea is causing serious erosion.
