Farm Stay East AngliaA Day Out in and around ElyEly is a beautiful city, dominated by its spectacular Cathedral. Ely was once an island surrounded by marshes. Narrow streets and lanes are lined with historic buildings, such as the home of the former home of Oliver Cromwell, now a museum.
The river Cam runs through Ely and there is an attractive riverside area, with a marina and several places to eat. There are also a few antique shops to browse around.
Ely Cathedral is one of England’s finest cathedrals with guided tours and tours of the Octagon and West Tower. There are monastic precincts, a brass rubbing centre and Stained Glass Museum.
The Old Gaol in Market Street tells the history of Ely from prehistory to present day. Collections include archaeology and social history, as well as displays of the condemned gaol cells.
The Babylon Gallery on the riverside offers a mixture of national touring exhibitions, and high quality curated exhibitions of work by local and regional artists.
Overlooking the River Cam The Maltings, built in 1868, was converted into a Public Hall in 1971, and events are held in this fabulous building, which is also a restaurant and bar.
Out and about Wicken Fen Nature Reserve (National Trust) is the last remaining undrained portion of the great Fen levels of East Anglia, rich in plant and invertebrate life, and ideal for birds. There is also a working wind pump, Fen cottage and café.
Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Hundred Foot Bank is a wetland nature reserve of 1, 000 acres attracting large numbers of ducks and swans in winter, waders in spring and summer, plus a range of wild plants and butterflies.
