A Day Out around Great Dunmow and Braintree

There are lots of lovely places to visit in this region of Essex. The Great Dunmow Maltings date from 1560 and retain much of the original malting infrastructure used to produce malt by hand. They are superb examples of 16th C and 18th C architecture. There is also a town museum.

Not far away Felsted Vineyard at Crix Green is a 12-acre site with a working vineyard and brewery. Visitors can learn how wine is made and how to brew. There is also Bardfield Vineyard at Great Bardfield.

Nearby Thaxted has quaint streets lined with fine medieval buildings, including the 15th C Guildhall and thatched Almshouses. The Thaxted Garden for Butterflies is a 1-acre retirement garden especially planted and developed to be attractive to butterflies and moths.

Braintree is a bustling market town standing on the old Roman Road. Close by is the Freeport Designer Outlet Village. At the Braintree District Museum, Threads of Time is a permanent exhibition housed in a converted Victorian school, telling the story of the Braintree District and its important place in our history.

The Town Hall Centre is a Grade II listed which houses the Art Gallery and the Tourist Information Centre. It is situated on the historic market square which dates back to 1199.

Not far from Braintree in the pretty village of Bocking is Bocking Windmill. A Postmill built in 1721, with a small collection of historic agricultural items. Also in Bocking you can find Dorewards Hall Farm. This historical working farm and shop is open all year and hold events and seasonal activities.
