A DAY OUT AROUND THETFORD

The market town of Thetford is a wonderful centre for exploring this huge area of forest and heathland whether on foot, by bike or on horseback along the waymarked walks & trails. HIGH LODGE FOREST CENTRE (off B1107) in the heart of the forest is the place to get information on all there is to do with maps, cycle hire, orienteering etc as well as picnic areas, a shop and refreshments. For the more energetic try GO APE Aerial Trekking!

Not far away is GRIMES GRAVES English Heritage 4000 year old Neolithic flint mines with one of the 300 pits open to the public, and a site exhibition.

THETFORD itself shows many traces of its historic past with Iron Age ramparts surrounding the Norman castle mound, the priory ruins and the fine buildings of the Town Centre's conservation area. There are many archaeological digs and the MUSEUM in the picturesque Ancient House helps you discover the past and find out about Dulip Singh and Thomas Paine. At weekends & bank holidays visit the BURRELL STEAM MUSEUM. Enjoy the market on Tuesdays & Saturdays or rest in the peaceful KINGS HOUSE GARDENS.

We have B&B accommodation and holiday cottages near Thetford in Mundford, and not far away near Bury St Edmunds in Elmswell, Woolpit, Bradfield Combust, Haugley & Wortham
